Tons of Plastic Waste Collected From The Rivers
Tons of Plastic Waste Collected From The Sea and Along Seashore
The Citarum River on the island of Java, Indonesia, became famous in 2013 when it was named as one of the 10 most polluted places on earth.
Water pollution on an island like Java directly impacts the lives of up to 145 million people. It's the reason why every year 300 out of 1,000 Indonesians suffer from water-borne diseases like cholera, dysentry and typhoid. It’s also why a freshwater lake such as Rawa Pening in Central Java is 70% covered with invasive plants and was predicted to dry out by 2021 – cutting off 72 villages from their primary source of fish and irrigation for crops.
It was 10 years ago that the World Bank pledged $226 million annually to help clean up Java's rivers. But while the government has taken steps to place restrictions on factory effluents one huge issue remains: livestock waste and chemical fertilisers.
Biogas Engineering Internship (Long Term)
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
It was my last year of university and I felt confused about my direction in life. I knew I wanted to do something with a positive impact and a short-term environmental volunteering internship seemed ideal to see if this was for me. No other renewable energy volunteer internship I could find was as hands-on as the program offered at Rumah Ilham... But I never actually completed the biogas engineering module! Instead, Pak Willem learned I had a background in journalism and asked if I wanted to write about his incredible NGO instead. Not only did I get to travel to Central Java, West Java, East Java, Bali and Lombok visiting and interviewing remote villagers but a Singaporean TV crew even flew out to film our work! I created two fundraisers that brought in almost $10,000 for various environmental projects... And I discovered exactly what I wanted to do with my career.I cannot underestimate the life-changing experience I had at Rumah Ilham. Pak Willem, Mas Billy, Mas Basuki, Mas Bambang, Romo Phillip and all the beautiful people you meet will have an impact on you that lasts for years.
We are one of the only NGOs in Indonesia tackling the problems of environmental pollution at the household level. In our home of Jogjakarta there's an estimated 300,000 heads of cattle. Our biogas digesters turn cow waste from a toxic source of water pollution into high-quality organic compost that can also fully replace fossil fuel-based fertilisers.
